Work Hard Play Hard
So you may be wondering, what does it actually look like to be a member of California Eta?
Our philosophy, and that of PhiDE internationally, is to work hard and play hard. At any time you may find members studying together in Shiley, volunteering in San Diego, or just relaxing on and off campus. As an organization we provide a wide range of activities for members to engage with, from trips to Big Bear to professional development sessions with physicians. Being a pre-med student is hard so we aim not only to support our members as future physicians, but to provide them opportunities to relax and enjoy their time at USD.
If you are interested in potentially becoming a member, reach out! We hold recruitment at the beginning of each semester but take questions year-round. Please send an email to usd.phideltaepsilon@gmail.com or wait to speak to us at the Alcala Bazaar. Either way, we hope to hear from you soon!
Membership Benefits
Membership is PhiDE is more than just a line on your resume, it is a lifelong membership in a family of future and current physicians.
We provide our members a wide range of professional and educational development opportunities. We cover topics including but not limited to application strategies and timelines, MCAT prep, resume building, interview skills, networking opportunities with physicians, leadership conferences, and help with structuring our time in college.
Beyond what we cover in meetings, PhiDE provides resources regarding outside opportunities such as volunteering, internships, study abroad programs, shadowing, clinical experiences, and more. We value providing a wide range of options for our members to best support them on their path into medicine.
There are additional perks to being a member, such as discounts with services such as Kaplan Test Prep and Brookes Brothers Suits. Since PhiDE is an international organization with chapters at many colleges, members can also reach out to local chapters while traveling for interviews, both to potentially find a place to stay, but to also get first hand accounts of the student experience at a given medical school.
Member Testimonial: Celeste Ely

"I joined PhiDE my sophomore year and it was absolutely the best thing I could have done!
Not only has PhiDE provided me the tools I have needed to thrive as a pre-med, but it has given me the community I have always wanted.
It really is like a family, I have met some of my best friends here, including Rachel, who not only was my roommate, but will be my maid of honor when I get married."
